Perched on the sun-kissed shores of Coronado Island, just a short stretch from San Diego, the Hotel del Coronado stands as a testament to time—a beacon of both history and heart. For many, Coronado is renowned for its naval base, where the Navy SEALs train, but in my world, it is forever intertwined with the iconic “Hotel Del.” This storied resort is more than a place to stay; it’s a treasure trove of memories, a symbol of grandeur, and a timeless escape that has captured my imagination since childhood.

Growing up in Los Angeles, I first dreamed of visiting the Hotel del Coronado while watching Some Like It Hot. Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis made the hotel seem like the epitome of glamour, and I promised myself that one day, I would step through those grand doors. Yet, despite living just a couple of hours away, it wasn’t until I was 22 that I caught my first glimpse of this legendary beachfront resort.

A Magical First Visit

My first trip to the Hotel del Coronado was a winter wonderland, unlike any other. My husband (then boyfriend) and I made the journey to experience their annual holiday ice skating on the beach. Skating along the shore, with the sound of crashing waves as our backdrop, felt like pure magic. We laughed, indulged in ice cream along the promenade, and wandered through the resort’s elegant shops. Our day ended with us relaxing on the soft sand, watching the sunset paint the sky in hues of pink and gold.

That visit was the beginning of my love affair with the Hotel del Coronado. Fast forward years later, and we’ve returned countless times, each trip more special than the last. Now, with our own children in tow, we’ve made it a tradition to visit for the holiday skating each winter—creating new memories that echo the joy of that first trip.

A Family Tradition

Over the years, the hotel has undergone several renovations, each one adding a fresh touch while preserving its timeless elegance. Our family loves exploring both the old and new parts of the property, uncovering hidden gems and enjoying the familiar charms that make the Hotel Del so unique. Last year, we celebrated our daughter’s 8th birthday right on the beach, a picture-perfect day filled with sun, sand, and so many smiles. It’s the kind of place where moments like these turn into lifelong memories, where a simple walk on the shore becomes a treasured family tradition.

Beachfront Bliss

One of the more recent additions to the hotel is their luxurious beachfront cabanas. These private retreats offer the ultimate in relaxation, with lush lawns and comfortable seating that encourage you to linger long into the afternoon. Whether you’re there for a long weekend or just a day trip, the cabanas provide a tranquil escape where the only task at hand is to soak up the sun and breathe in the ocean air.

And then there’s The Shore House, the crown jewel of the Hotel Del’s recent renovations. This private enclave within the resort offers guests exclusive access to a stunning pool on the sand, as well as a private restaurant where you can dine in peace, away from the crowds. The Shore House feels like a retreat within a retreat—a sanctuary of calm with all the luxury you could dream of. The ocean views are, of course, spectacular, and it’s easy to see why this new addition has quickly become a favorite for returning guests.

Brunches fit for royalty

No stay at the Hotel del Coronado would be complete without indulging in their iconic Sunday brunch. This is no ordinary brunch—it’s a culinary experience, one that requires a reservation made well in advance but rewards you with a feast worthy of the effort. Taking several hours to enjoy, this lavish spread is the epitome of indulgence, set against the stunning backdrop of the Pacific Ocean.

From an extensive oyster bar to hand-scooped soft serve ice cream, the options are seemingly endless. Our kids delighted in the chocolate desserts and fluffy pancakes, while I savored the expertly cooked eggs and delicate crepes. Every bite was a celebration of flavor, and the ambiance—relaxed yet refined—made it the perfect place to while away a Sunday afternoon.

Endless Fun for kids

For families, the Hotel del Coronado is a dream come true. Our kids adore the resort’s many facilities, from the kid-friendly pools to the beachside games and activities. It’s the kind of place where you can spend hours—or days—without ever wanting to leave. And while the children are off making sandcastles or discovering the nearby tide pools, parents can sneak away to enjoy a moment of quiet at the spa or sip a cocktail while watching the sunset from the Sun Deck.

Tips & Recommendations

If you’re planning a day trip to the Hotel del Coronado, be sure to arrive early to secure parking—it can get busy, especially during weekends and high season. For those looking to explore the natural beauty of Coronado, I highly recommend the tide pools located just to the left of the hotel’s property. They’re a hidden gem, offering a chance to discover marine life up close.

When it comes to dining, reservations are essential, particularly for the hotel’s finer restaurants. However, if you forget to book in advance, the Sun Deck is a fantastic option with its unbeatable views of the sunset. And if you’re looking for an extra special experience, the holiday skating on the beach is a must—it’s one of the most unique and magical ways to celebrate the season.

A Place to Make Memories

The Hotel Del offers  it’s visitors and guests the elegance of its historic architecture to the modern luxuries of its new additions, every corner of this iconic hotel invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and savor life’s most beautiful moments. Whether you’re visiting for a day or a week, the Hotel Del offers an experience like no other—a blend of timeless charm and contemporary comfort set against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. It’s no wonder this hotel remains one of my favorite places in the world.
