The Glacier Express first landed on my radar in a travel video showcasing its breathtaking Alpine views, and from that moment, it became a bucket list adventure. There’s something irresistibly romantic about train travel—perhaps it’s the nostalgic allure of old films, the graceful glide of the carriages, or the timelessness of it all. For me, the Glacier Express promised the ultimate combination: scenic beauty and old-world elegance.

In January, my husband and I planned a trip to St. Moritz for the Snow Polo World Cup—a return to one of our favorite winter destinations. And though our itinerary was already tight, we couldn’t resist figuring out a way to squeeze in the Glacier Express. It was somewhat last minute, but the opportunity to journey from St. Moritz to Zermatt, another iconic Swiss town I had always longed to visit, was too tempting to pass up. What followed was an experience that transcended any travel we’d done before.

The charm of st moriz station

The train station in St. Moritz is quaint by European standards—intimate and unpretentious, unlike the vast, bustling terminals found in larger cities. This simplicity made our departure entirely stress-free. It felt more like stepping into an exclusive club than beginning a long-haul journey. The Glacier Express, with its sleek carriages gleaming in the alpine sunlight, awaited us on the platform, and we were greeted warmly by the porter at the entrance to the Excellence Class cabin.

Excellence On board

Excellence Class, the highest tier on the Glacier Express, is an experience unlike any other. As soon as we settled into our spacious seats, it became clear that every detail had been meticulously thought out for our comfort. The design of the cabin, with panoramic windows offering an unobstructed view of the snow-capped mountains and deep valleys, felt almost regal.

At the rear of the car, there’s a bar area where passengers can stretch their legs and admire the views from a different vantage point. With every seat strategically positioned to offer an unobstructed view, there truly isn’t a bad place to sit in Excellence Class. But for those who want to move around and soak up the atmosphere from every angle, the bar is a lovely place to relax and enjoy a cocktail while the train glides through the mountains.

Unforgettable Views

While my husband and I were tucked into our cozy seats, it didn’t take long for us to strike up conversations with our fellow passengers. Excellence Class fosters a sense of camaraderie, and the staff only added to the convivial atmosphere, engaging with us in friendly conversation while ensuring we were pampered throughout the trip. By the end of the journey, we had made friends with travelers from around the globe, all equally mesmerized by the experience.

And then, of course, there were the views. Words—and even photos—fall short of capturing the grandeur of the Swiss Alps. Snow-covered peaks, steep gorges, and crystal-clear rivers greeted us at every turn. It was a visual feast, a living postcard unfolding mile after mile. The Glacier Express passes through 91 tunnels and over 291 bridges, winding its way through some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes on Earth. It’s a spectacle that simply must be seen in person to be fully appreciated.

A restaurant onboard

What truly defined the journey was the unexpected delight of the dining experience. Over the course of eight hours, we were served an impressive eight-course meal, each dish paired with expertly chosen wines from the very regions we passed. Initially, I had my doubts—train dining often leaves much to be desired, no matter the premium price tag. But to my surprise, the Glacier Express exceeded every expectation. The dishes, rivaling any fine restaurant, were prepared with locally sourced ingredients and impeccable presentation. From delicate amuse-bouches to hearty main courses like a perfectly cooked, tender filet, each bite was a revelation. Desserts, crafted with Swiss chocolate and fresh strawberries, were an indulgence unto themselves. The wine pairings, including local varieties, elevated the meal even further, making it feel as though we were dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant on rails. It was, without a doubt, the finest meal I’ve ever experienced on a train.

As the hours passed, the journey took on an almost meditative quality. The train’s gentle motion, the soft chatter of fellow passengers, and the ever-changing landscape outside the window created a sense of calm that is hard to describe. It felt like time had slowed down, allowing us to savor each moment, each view, each course of our meal.

Tips & Recommendations

The Glacier Express is a full-day journey—eight hours in total—so preparation is key. If you’re prone to motion sickness, I recommend taking precautions before boarding, though the train’s smooth ride ensures that most travelers will feel comfortable throughout the trip. I also suggest planning to stay the night in either Zermatt or St. Moritz, as both towns are well worth exploring. Zermatt, with its charming streets and breathtaking views of the Matterhorn, offers a perfect conclusion to the journey.

If you’re seeking an unforgettable travel experience, the Glacier Express is one not to be missed. Whether you’re a train enthusiast or simply looking for a unique way to explore Switzerland’s most spectacular scenery, this journey promises to deliver in every way imaginable. More than just a train ride—it’s a feast for the senses, a celebration of the landscape, and a reminder that sometimes, the journey is just as important as the destination.
